This investment, however, appears to come as Pocket Gems plans to launch “a new studio building 3D synchronous multiplayer mobile games for hardcore gamers.” This likely means esports, especially if Tencent is involved. Pocket Gems’ current lineup is quite unique: Episode is a “mobile storytelling network and platform,” and War Dragons is a multiplayer strategy game about dragon raiding. “We admire their history of focusing on top talent to create innovative new products that can delight users, and look forward to a bright future ahead.” “ Tencent is happy to reaffirm our long term support for our strategic partner, Pocket Gems,” said Tencent senior vice president Steven Ma. Pocket Gems plans to launch “a new studio building 3D synchronous multiplayer mobile games for hardcore gamers.” The $90 million investment follows an earlier one in 2015, and brings Tencent’s ownership of the company to about 38 percent, along with valuing the game developer at $500 million. Tencent is investing again in gaming, this time into San Francisco’s Pocket Gems Inc.-the developer of mobile games Episode and War Dragons.
